ABOUT ME
Educational Author, Novelist,
Trainer & Songwriter
I’ve been involved in producing materials for English language learners all over the world for more than forty years, including course books, songs, sketches, plays and methodology books.
A lot of the things I wrote were for world-wide consumption, but I’ve also written area-specific books for places as diverse as Spain, Poland, China, Vietnam and Indonesia, and for the larger areas of Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Before all that started, I was an English teacher and teacher trainer for about twenty years. I spent a year teaching English in Seville, Spain (see below), then two decades working at International House, London and also at two London FE Colleges, Westminster College and West London College.
A LIFETIME IN EDUCATION
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
My first English teaching job was at El Instituto Británico in Seville, Spain where I worked from 1968 to 1969. It was a wonderful place to work, an absolutely beautiful building with a magnificent courtyard. Dede and I visited the city and the school in May 2026 and met Virginia, the current Director of Operations. She agreed to pose for a photograph outside my old classroom.
THE ENGLISH TEACHING THEATRE
For nearly thirty years, I worked with the English Teaching Theatre, a company which provided a stage show for learners of English.
The ETT did more than two hundred and fifty tours to fifty-five countries in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, performing to more than a million students and teachers of English.
Many of the sketches I co-wrote with my colleague Doug Case are available for free download on the Plays & Sketches page. You can also find audio links for some of the educational songs that I recorded.

PUBLISHING & EDUCATIONAL WORK
I’m still involved in ELT work, and I’m also writing fiction.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
I’ve published two novels – The Duke’s Portrait and King and Country – and I’m working on a third, provisionally entitled The Siren of Barkston Gardens.
In addition, I’m completing a collection of short stories, which I also intend to publish, and I will upload one or two of them here.
CURRENT PROJECTS
This website is home for a lot of this work, bringing together books, creative writing, theatre, music and selected material from throughout my career.
I hope you can use lots of it!
