PRESENTING

Sharing ideas, inspiring learning, building connections worldwide

Like many of my colleagues who write ELT materials, I’ve been lucky enough to visit countries where my materials are being used, which has given me lots of opportunities to talk to the teachers who use them.  I’ve given plenary talks at conferences in Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Bahrain, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Croatia, Cuba and … another thirty countries!

PRESENTING AROUND THE WORLD

And I’ve done practical workshops in even more places, often but not always focussing on how to incorporate drama ideas into classroom procedures.

Doing this kind of travelling teaches you a lot about the real world of English language teaching. You meet hard-working and dedicated teachers wherever you go, but language learning is NOT a level playing field, with differences in class size and available technology just two of the reasons for this.

In this section, you can see some of the diverse and exciting aspects of my presentation work.

Belgrade, Serbia

Talking to 1,200 teachers in Belgrade, Serbia. The largest audience I’ve ever addressed.

Guangzhou, China

Doing a drama game called ‘What time is it?’ with primary school teachers in Guangzhou, China.

Arad, Romania

The Teenplay Theatre Festival in Arad, Romania.  I was President of the jury for five years.

Timisoara, Romania

Plenary conference talk in Timisoara, Romania.

FORTALEZA, BRAZIL

Workshop with teachers in Brazil.  They know they will have to DO something if they attend!

SãO PAULO, BRAZIL

The Oxford University Press team in Brazil.  We couldn’t do what we do without the support of local teams.

Istanbul, Turkey

Workshop in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Participants will probably spend half their time standing up.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN

Training soldiers in Taiwan.  I have no idea how this came to be part of the itinerary.

Brighton, UK

IATEFL UK is always a brilliant event. These were some of the people who attended my talk one of the many times that the conference was held in Brighton.

Tehran, Iran

Dede and I did a weekend conference with these hundred wonderful teachers in Tehran, Iran.

china

The biggest course book project Dede and I worked on was New Standard English for China.  Here we are with other members of the team, editor-in-chief Simon Greenall, and co-authors David Newbold and Russell Stannard; photo taken on the Great Wall.

SEOUL, KOREA

Most of the workshops I do are with teachers, but I do try to work with real students, too.  I did a drama workshop with these enthusiastic young people in Seoul, Korea.  Marianne Axon from Romania was their teacher.

KHARKIV, UKRAINE

My first visit to Ukraine about twenty years ago was to talk to these teachers in Kharkiv who were using my book Move Ahead.

KYIV, UKRAINE

After the first Ukrainian war against the Russians in 2014, some veterans decided to stage Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.  Dede and I went to Kyiv to help them with the staging.

Havana, Cuba

Cuban students who were putting on a show using sketches from Further Off-Stage.
